Newsletter Spring 2010

From the President

pres I am constantly reminded of how lucky I am to be a member of this club and to play one of the most beautiful courses in the world.

In addition to an extremely full schedule we are introducing a kick-off meeting and a welcome to our new members. (please see the details below)and a home and home match in the fall against Dairy Creek.

An extra note: the board felt in these poor economic times we would not raise the $3 fee for Tuesdays to $4.

Rules Update

Once again the MBGC Board has decided to aggressively tackle the problem of rules violations. The Rules Committee in conjunction with the Board has the authority to post scores not posted, warn repeat violators and then post penalty scores. Those who repeatedly violate the “Rules of Golf” are subject to a strong warning at first and then the possibility of disqualifications and finally suspension of the right to participate in local and NCGA tournaments.

Furthermore the Committee has the authority and the responsibility to enforce Rule 33-7 Decision 9 on any player who refuses to call another player of a rules violation. No stigma should ever be applied to calling another player on a rules violation.

33-7/9 Competitor Who Knows Player Has Breached Rules Does Not Inform Player or Committee in Timely Manner.

The responsibility for knowing the Rules lies with all players. In stroke play, the player and his marker have an explicit responsibility for the correctness of the player's score card. There may, however, be exceptional individual cases where, in order to protect the interests of every other player in the competition, it would be reasonable to expect a fellow-competitor or another competitor to bring to light a player's breach of the Rules by notifying the player, his marker or the Committee.

In such exceptional circumstances, it would be appropriate for the Committee to impose a penalty of disqualification under Rule 33-7 on a fellow-competitor or another competitor if it becomes apparent that he has failed to advise the player, his marker or the Committee of a Rules breach with the clear intention of allowing that player to return an incorrect score.

SUPER News

What a soggy start to the New Year! This weather pattern has definitely not been good for playing a lot of golf, but it has been great for the Central Coast and our golf courses. I have only been here for a bit over two years and this is the first that I have seen our coastal lake levels raise. We suffered some tree damage and scattered debris during the storm. The nets guarding the homes to the left of #6 and tee box on #9 received some new tears as well. You can view the pictures and progress of the clean up on my new blogsite, www.slocountygolfcourses.blogspot.com

My staffs have worked tirelessly to get the course back into shape and get the greens smoothed out after not being able to mow for nearly 5 days. The rains have helped to “flush” out the soils which means that salts that accumulate in the soils were washed out of the soil profile creating a more conducive environment for turf and root growth. We will resume work on the tee box renovation once things have dried out a bit and our equipment will not cause more harm than good.

These weather patterns have been very conducive to fungal damage on our Poa annua (annual bluegrass) greens. The wet, soggy conditions followed by warm sunshine are the perfect habitat for fusarium patch. This is the same disease that infested nearly all of our greens last spring and we have been monitoring its presence in our greens very closely and following outbreaks with applications of fungicides when necessary. It is our goal to protect the environment by using very few of these chemicals, but we also have the goal of beautiful greens for you our golfers! We are changing our cultural practices first and performing acts that can aid in disease suppression before we result to chemical controls, but sometimes there just is no choice. We strive to be stewards of the environment and adhere to our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plan to reduce chemical usage.

Bear with us as we cope with Mother Nature and the surprises yet to come. In the mean time enjoy the much-needed rains and get to the course when the sun is out and we are blessed with the tremendous weather we often take for granted here on the Central Coast. I will see you on the golf course!

Weekly Play

puzzled We could really use your help in the way you complete your score cards for our weekly games!

Please list your handicap! If we have to look it up for every player we would never get done!

Please put first AND LAST names.
You know who was in your group, but we find it hard to decide which Bill or Bob or Jack you are referring to. Wouldn’t want the prize money going to the wrong player!

And please make sure you are only signed up once! We have had a lot of duplicate signups lately which has caused confusion for the starter and players.

Pictures Wanted!

Any members with digital pictures that they think would be appropriate for the web site should contact Margaret Breen at  morrobaygc@hotmail.com
